Know Your VP

Judy Petersen took office as Guidance Division Vice President in July 2000. She is a 1977 graduate of the University of Utah with a bachelor's degree in English and French. She completed a master's degree in educational psychology in 1987. Her school counseling career began in 1986 at Kearns High School in the Granite School District, which was at that time the largest district in Utah. In 1993, Petersen was hired as the State Specialist for School Counseling and Career Development at the Utah State Office of Education. While there, she provided leadership for the statewide implementation of the Utah Model for Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance. In 1993, only two-dozen schools were involved in the program implementation process. By 1998, nearly all 240 secondary schools in Utah were implementing the Comprehensive Guidance Program. And they had met stringent program standards and qualified to receive funding appropriated for guidance by the Utah State Legislature.

By 1998, 5 1/2 years and 100,000 miles later, Petersen needed a break. She was granted a one-year leave of absence by the Utah State Office of Education and returned to the ranks as a high school counselor. She had found the opportunity of a lifetime with the Utah Comprehensive Guidance Program, so in late summer of 1999, she made the toughest decision of her professional career and elected not to return to the Utah State Office of Education.

Petersen is currently splitting her time in the Granite School District as a guidance counselor at Granger High School and as the Comprehensive Guidance Project Specialist for Granite School District Student Services. She is still very much involved at the state level, as she serves on the Select Committee for Comprehensive Guidance and on the governing boards for UACTE and USCA. In her spare time, she is an adjunct faculty member at both the University of Utah and Utah State University in their respective school counselor training programs.

Petersen has enthusiastically accepted the responsibility as Guidance Division Vice President for the next three years and looks forward to getting to know division members. She believes that, together, guidance and career development professionals can make significant contributions to their field through Guidance Division Policy Board and division members. Judy Petersen can be contacted by e-mail at
