DISNEYLAND PIGSKIN CLASSIC TELECAST TO FEATURE TOP TEAMS, OLYMPIC PRODUCER AND TRIBUTE TO BILL WALSH

DISNEYLAND PIGSKIN CLASSIC TELECAST TO FEATURE
TOP TEAMS, OLYMPIC PRODUCER AND TRIBUTE TO BILL WALSH
CHARLOTTE, N.C., Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Raycom's telecast of the August 26 Disneyland Pigskin Classic will feature two of the nation's top college football teams, a veteran producer with Olympic experience and reflections on Coach Bill Walsh and his return to college football.
The first game of the college football season, the Disneyland Pigskin Classic pits Texas A&M, ranked as high as second in pre-season polls, against Walsh's Stanford squad, ranked 17th. Kickoff from Anaheim (Calif.) Stadium is 9 p.m. EDT. Raycom will telecast the game to 80 percent of the country over a nationally syndicated network.
Jim Zrake, a veteran producer who helped produce NBC's TripleCast coverage of the 1992 Summer Olympics, will head a 45-member production crew. Joining Zrake will be director Doug Freeman, who directed portions of NBC's Olympic coverage and is lead director for Raycom's Pac-10 basketball telecasts. The remainder of the crew will be West Coast production and engineering professionals handpicked by Peter Rolfe, Raycom's vice president and executive
producer who has been with the company since 1987. A former NBC Sports producer, Rolfe assigns all crews for the more than 500 live sporting events telecast annually by Raycom, the nation's leading independent programmer.
Zrake, Raycom's coordinating producer on the West Coast, produced TripleCast coverage of swimming, water polo and soccer during which he focused on the personalities of various athletes. In the Disneyland Pigskin Classic telecast, Zrake will feature the return of Walsh, former coach of the four-time Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers. Throughout the game, top coaches and players will reminisce and reflect on Walsh's contributions to the sport of football.
"This game is a classic any way you look at it," said Zrake, who also produces Los Angeles Dodgers and California Angels baseball telecasts. "You've got the return of Walsh, one of football's greatest coaches. Stanford, which always has an explosive quarterback-oriented offense, is going against A&M's great defense, so it sizes up as a terrific battle. Add to that the glamour, joy and fun of Disneyland, which is just down the road. Viewers will see a Disney-produced halftime show and shots of the park featuring the nightly light and fireworks extravaganza. It will be a spectacle."
Talent for the game is veteran play-by-play announcer Phil Stone and color commentator Dave Rowe. Stone has worked for Raycom for the past six years, providing play-by-play for Pac-10 basketball, Southwest Conference football, the Freedom Bowl and the Kickoff Classic. A former All-Pro defensive lineman who started for the 1977 Super Bowl champion Oakland Raiders, Rowe provides color commentary for Southwest Conference football and the Kickoff Classic.
Televising the Disneyland Pigskin Classic for the third-straight year, Raycom will telecast the game in more than 100 markets, including the top five -- New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco. With Texas A&M boasting its strongest team in years and in the running for the national championship, interest is high in Texas, where the telecast is being shown in 15 markets, the most in any state. The telecast entrenches Raycom's presence in Texas, where viewers also see Raycom productions of Houston Oilers pre-season games, Southwest Conference football and basketball and "Lone Stars," a series of three one-hour shows featuring in-depth interviews with top Texas athletes.
The Disneyland Pigskin Classic kicks off Raycom's football coverage, which includes the August 29 Kickoff Classic from Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.; the Freedom Bowl, and the Blockbuster Bowl, America's newest New Year's Day classic, which will be telecast nationally over CBS.
Raycom's basketball telecasts include a 31-game schedule for distribution over ABC and regional network coverage for the Big Eight, Big Ten, Pac-10, Metro Conference, Southwest Conference and, in association with JP Sports, the Atlantic Coast Conference.
