EXPAND IBM'S OFFERINGS TO OEM MARKETPLACE
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM Corp. (NYSE: IBM) today announced new storage products that significantly expand its offerings to the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) marketplace, including 2.5-inch disk drives, rewritable optical disk drives, a magnetic tape subsystem and a 1.2-gigabyte (GB) 3.5-inch disk drive that uses a leading-edge head technology.
Manufacturers of personal computers (PCs), workstations, minicomputers and midrange systems, as well as makers of a variety of storage systems -- such as optical libraries -- are some of the firms that can use IBM storage devices in their own products.
"Today's announcements provide the storage technology solutions our OEM customers seek," said Charles A. Haggerty, vice president of OEM Storage Products in IBM's new Storage Products line of business. "Through the use of the latest technologies, we can offer customers high data reliability and high storage capacities at competitive prices across the broadest range of products in the industry worldwide."
 New 2.5-inch Drives and Low-Cost 3.5-inch Drives.
New 60-megabyte (MB) and 120-MB 2.5-inch disk drives were introduced today, adding to IBM's family of smaller drives. Ideal for small PCs, laptops, notebooks and other products where physical space is at a premium, these drives are only 0.5 and 0.67 inches high, respectively, and are among the most reliable, high-capacity 2.5-inch drives in the industry.
Further, IBM's 80-MB 2.5-inch drive, announced last year, will be offered, on a special bid basis, as a removable hard disk drive (HDD) that can fit into existing 3.5-inch disk drive bays.
IBM also added to its 3.5-inch disk drive family with two new low- cost drives that provide higher capacities at competitive prices. A single evaluation unit of the new 80-MB 3.5-inch drive is $300 and the 160-MB drive is $355. Prices are lower for quantities of production units, making these drives attractive for manufacturers of inexpensive PCs and other products where low-cost storage is a key consideration.
New Head Technology in 1.2-GB 3.5-inch Drive.
IBM announced a higher capacity version of its acclaimed magnetoresistive (MR) head 3.5-inch disk drive that can store up to 1.2 billion bytes of information, or more than 550,000 double-spaced typewritten pages of text.
Available in the third quarter of this year, it will be among the first 1.2-GB 3.5-inch disk drives in full production.
These drives can achieve higher capacities to a large extent because of their use of the MR head technology, developed by IBM engineers in San Jose, Calif. The MR head disk drive employs independent elements to write and read data: an inductive element for writing and an MR element for reading. As a result, data can be read more accurately and quickly tan with traditional heads and information can be packed more densely onto the drive surface.
This highly reliable drive -- mean time between failures is 500,000 hours -- can be used in minicomputers, midrange systems, workstations and disk arrays.
Also, IBM will sell a storage unit that contains two 1.2-GB drives in a 5.25-inch form factor. Customers can use this unit in systems designed for larger form factor drives, while taking advantage of the advanced technology of IBM's smaller drives.
 New Optical Drives.
Also introduced are new optical disk drives, including a faster model of IBM's popular 3.5-inch rewritable optical drive and a rewritable 5.25-inch optical drive.
The 127-MB 3.5-inch rewritable optical drive now has a data transfer rate of 625-kilobytes (KB) per second and an increased rotation speed of 3000 rpms, compared with 384-KB and 1800 rpms in the original model announced last spring. The data seek time is improved from 60 milliseconds to 40 milliseconds. The drive can be used in personal computers and optical libraries for multimedia applications, for example, and was recently recognized by BYTE magazine as one of the "Best Products of 1991".
IBM's rewritable 5.25-inch optical disk drive offers 650-MB (unformatted) of removable storage per disk. It is particularly suited to the demanding requirements of optical storage libraries and for applications that need high-capacity removable random access storage.
 Magnetic Tape Subsystem.
Also available to OEM customers is a new rack-mounted 1/2-inch magnetic tape subsystem. This subsystem can be used by manufacturers to create data storage systems and disk drive backup capabilities for midrange and intermediate-size computer systems.
The tape subsystem is available in three models and uses industry- leading 36-track recording technology, Improved Data Recording Capability (IDRC) and the Enhanced Capacity Cartridge System Tape to store up to 2.4-GB of data on a single cartridge. When combined with the Automatic Cartridge Loader feature on high-end models, total unattended disk drive backup capacity can be between 14.4-GB and 28.8-GB.
 Product Displays in Hannover.
Several IBM storage products were displayed in systems made by OEM customers at the CeBIT '92 trade show this week in Hannover, Germany.
In addition, IBM is showing several prototype storage products. Among them: 1.6-GB and 2.0-GB versions of its magnetoresistive head 3.5-inch disk drive and a RAID-5 storage product for PC-attached server environments.
RAID, or Redundant Arrays of Independent Disks, is a storage architecture that provides high data reliability. The product displayed by IBM uses numerous 400-MB or 1-GB 3.5-inch disk drives to provide up to 7-GB of storage and continuous access to data, even if one disk drive fails.
