DISHASTER; Warning as dishwashers recalled in fire hazard alert.

Byline: RORY TEVLIN news@irishmirror.ie

HOMEOWNERS have been warned of dangerous models of dishwasher that can burst into flames in use.

Manufacturer BSH Home Appliances has recalled some Bosch, Neff and Siemens dishwashers after an investigation by RTE's The Consumer Show.

The machines with the potential fault were manufactured between 1999 and 2005 and have already been recalled in the UK, US and Australia.

BSH estimates that 29,000 dishwashers were sold in Ireland over the period but no recall took place here until new evidence was presented by The Consumer Show.

The machines are in danger of catching fire during surges on the electrical network.

RTE's team spoke to a woman whose kitchen was extensively damaged after their dishwasher went on fire in October last year.

JGer Corcoran, from Leopardstown, Co Dublin, was shocked when a fire broke out in her home shortly after she went out for a walk.

Her two children, who were in the house, detected a smell of smoke from the kitchen and discovered flames coming from the appliance.

The 44-year-old said thankfully no one was injured but it could have been a lot worse.

She added: "When you think of the amount of times you put on the dishwasher and you leave the house, it's a very chilling thought.

"It's frightening to think how close you could be to something more tragic happening."

The Corcoran family bought their dishwasher in 2005 and the same make and model was one of a number of Bosch machines recalled in the UK in July 2011.

But the recall was not extended to Ireland until yesterday.

Bosch earlier said the dishwashers did not pose a threat here as the national grid is not known to experience the same voltage peaks as the UK. A spokesman added: "Our reports showed the average voltage throughout Europe is 230V.

"Within the United Kingdom, a voltage of 240V is commonly found with peaks of up to 250V and above on a permanent level."

But since 2008, a standard voltage range applies across Europe, which means all appliances sold must be safe to operate in the range of 207V to 253V.

The Bosch dishwashers affected were manufactured between 1999 and early 2005.

They are in the batch number range from FD 7901 to FD 8504.

The Consumer Show returns to RTE One at 8.30pm tonight.
