DISGRACE; On the eve of D-Day, war graves destroyed by yobs.

VANDALS smashed war graves just days before the 65th D-Day anniversary.

The yobs smashed 12 headstones marking the final resting place of war heroes in a wrecking spree at a Tyneside cemetery.

A veteran of the heroic DDay landings in Normandy today condemned the vandalism, before leaving for France to commemorate the anniversary of the storming of the beaches.

Well-wishers were also left sickened by the attacks on 20 different graves in the cemetery, leaving headstones broken, stone vases smashed and rubble strewn around the site.

Royal British Legion member Jenny Robson, pictured left, said: "It was very heartless to do. It's disgusting and just wanton vandalism on the part of people who have no respect for those who have died." FULL STORY: PAGES 2& 3
