DISCOVER MAGAZINE PICKS GLOBALINK SOFTWARE AS 1993'S MOST INNOVATIVE

FAIRFAX, Va., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Just as the calculator changed the world of arithmetic, Globalink, Inc.'s POWER TRANSLATOR(TM) foreign language translation software will change the world of international communication, according to Globalink.
That's why DISCOVER Magazine chose POWER TRANSLATOR as the recipient of its 1993 DISCOVER Award for Technological Innovation in the Computer Software category.
"A universal translator has long been a goal of artificial intelligence researchers," says Paul Hoffman, vice president, editor-in- chief, DISCOVER. "But what we really like about this software is that it's something that everyone can use."
POWER TRANSLATOR translates documents in Spanish, French or German to/from English in a sentence-by-sentence, idiomatically accurate format. It is available for IBM or IBM-compatible machines running DOS, making it widely accessible to virtually every personal computer user.
"Today's global marketplace means that people can not rely on one language to communicate," says Dominic Laiti, president, Globalink. "We're pleased that this award endorses the ability of POWER TRANSLATOR to improve communication between people of multiple language backgrounds."
Bedrich Chaloupka, Globalink chief scientist, was the official recipient of the award. Chaloupka, a pioneer and internationally recognized expert in computer language translation systems, authored and designed the software's dictionary and algorithms.
The DISCOVER Awards for Technological Innovation are designed to "recognize and promote those individuals and organizations who have made a significant impact on the world in which we live through technology," according to the magazine. This year's awards garnered more than 4,000 entries in seven categories, including Automotive, Aviation/Aerospace, Computer Hardware/Electronics, Computer Software, Environment, Sight and Sound.
The judges for the Computer Software category, who chose Globalink POWER TRANSLATOR as the winner, were Steward Cheifet, host and executive producer of the PBS Series "The Computer Chronicles"; John Dvorak, nationally syndicated computer columnist at PC MAGAZINE and PC COMPUTING; Esther Dyson, editor/publisher of RELEASE 1.0 and president, EDventure Holdings, Inc.; Fred Langa, editor, BYTE Magazine; and Marvin Minsky, MIT professor of computer science and early pioneer of artificial intelligence.
Globalink, Inc. (NASDAQ: GLNK) is a leading developer and marketer of computer software and services for foreign language translation. POWER TRANSLATOR addresses the needs of personal users, students and businesses with general translation requirements. The company's POWER TRANSLATOR PROFESSIONAL(TM) line -- available for DOS, Macintosh(R), OS/2(R) and UNIX(R) platforms -- satisfies the more demanding needs of professionals and serious business users.
