DISABLED AMERICAN VETERANS NAME FRUEHAUF TRAILER CORPORATION PLANT
AS NATION'S 1992 EMPLOYER OF THE YEAR
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- In recognition of its efforts to hire disabled veterans, Fruehauf Trailer Corporation's Waverly, Ohio, manufacturing plant has been selected as the nation's Outstanding Large Employer of the Year for 1992 by the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
The award, which was accepted by Fruehauf Waverly Plant Manager James E. Caywood, was presented at the DAV's 71st National Convention in Reno, Nev., earlier this month.
The national award is presented annually by the DAV -- an organization of more than 1 million wartime disabled veterans -- to a business with more than 200 employees in recognition of aggressive efforts to hire disabled veterans. According to DAV, the winner is selected from a group of businesses that are nominated by DAV state departments nationwide.
"We began hiring veterans as a demonstration of appreciation for what these people have sacrificed for our country," said Caywood. "But we've expanded those efforts because the veterans have proven to be very desirable employees -- dependable, hard-working and quick-learning. They've become key players on our production team and important contributors to our success here at Waverly."
According to Caywood, of the 420 people currently employed at the manufacturing plant, approximately 30 percent are veterans, and 36 of those are disabled veterans. Last year alone, Fruehauf's Waverly Plant hired eight disabled veterans and 14 Vietnam-era veterans.
Caywood said the Fruehauf facility -- which began production in 1975 -- works closely with the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services to promote maximum employment opportunities and assistance to veterans.
Fruehauf's Waverly facility -- which manufactures dry freight van trailers ranging from 28 feet to 53 feet in length -- also was the recent recipient of similar awards from the Ohio Disabled American Veterans and Vietnam Veterans of America groups.
Fruehauf Trailer Corporation (NYSE: FTC), based in Southfield, is the world's leading manufacturer of truck-trailers, producing, marketing and servicing the industry's widest range of van, refrigerated van, platform, dump, liquid and bulk tank trailer products through the industry's largest sales, service and parts network in North America. Fruehauf also manufactures and markets a complete range of trailer products and components through its worldwide network of affiliates and licensees.
