DIRTY TRICKS; Pro-Goodway campaign uncovered by the Echo.

Byline: Phillip Nifield and Louise Day

A CAMPAIGN to plant a series of pro-Russell Goodway letters in the South Wales Echo can be revealed today.

Top council officer Mike Doel, who is a close aide to the Lord Mayor, both pictured left, has admitted writing a letter for a Labour Party supporter to send to the Echo's Viewpoints page in support of the controversial Lord Mayor.

The letter, apparently sent by mistake to the Echo's offices, talked of a ``series'' of similar issues aimed at boosting the leader's public image.

Mr Goodway immediately distanced himself from the letter saying he was not aware of the letter writing and said it would not happen again.

The editor of the South Wales Echo, Alastair Milburn, has announced a review of how the letters page is monitored.
