DIGITAL WINS $150 MILLION OUTSOURCING CONTRACT FROM CANADIAN UTILITY
 MAYNARD, Mass., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE: DEC) today announced it has been awarded a contract to provide data center, desktop and consulting services to TransAlta
Utilities of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Under the terms of the contract


Digital will manage new and existing data center hardware, including four Digital VAX 9000 mainframe systems. Digital will also deploy personnel from both companies to manage information systems operations, client services, systems architecture, customer relations, quality and standards, and training. The estimated value of the five-year contract is $150(US) million.
 TransAlta's vice president of administration, Ron Bergen, commented, "The efficient management of information technology will help us maintain our position as a high quality low cost producer of electricity. Using Digital systems and services gets us both the technology and the expertise needed to operate effectively in a competitive market. We are doing this with advanced, integrated systems and services from Digital that network our entire enterprise."
 According to Patricia C. Foye, vice president of Digital's Worldwide Utilities Business Unit, "This contract confirms that our systems, applications and multivendor integration capabilities offer utility companies a cost effective Open Advantage. Our strategy is to provide technology and services that unify diverse systems and bring organizations together. Our work with TransAlta, and other major utilities internationally, underscores Digital's acceptance when users want efficient competitive advantage from their systems."
 Max Mayer, vice president of Systems Integration Services at Digital, added, "Focusing on our customer's critical business issues is a primary driver for our systems integration strategy. As a leader in networking multivendor systems, we are focusing on key industries like Utilities to support customer's specific business requirements."
 The Digital systems at TransAlta are used primarily to run core business applications such as plant maintenance, materials and warehouse management, accounting, customer billing and customer service information. In addition, TransAlta has installed Digital's ALL-IN-1 integrated office automation system which includes a corporate-wide electronic mail network of nearly 3000 users.
 Founded as Calgary Power in 1909, TransAlta Utilities' power distribution network covers more than 127,000 square miles and delivers more than 75 million kilowatt hours of power per day. TransAlta provides more than 70 percent of the total energy used in the province of Alberta. In addition, TransAlta's Digital systems handle billing for more than 312,000 customers per month.
