DIGITAL UPDATES HUDSON CONSTRUCTION SITE SITUATION

MAYNARD, Mass. -- Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE: DEC) is providing further information about the incident that occurred at the construction site of its future semiconductor manufacturing facility in Hudson, Mass. A portion of a form into which concrete was being poured this morning gave way.
Officials of the construction firms involved, Marshall Contractors, Inc., and S&F Contractors, Inc., indicated that 16 construction workers were injured. They said most of the injuries were minor; however, there were some injuries of a more serious nature. All injured workers were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Digital will be in close contact with the construction firms to monitor the condition of the affected workers.
Ed Caldwell, Digital's Vice President of Semiconductor Operations, said, "Our primary concern is for the workers involved in this morning's incident. The emergency response from local authorities was outstanding. The Fire and Police Departments, emergency transport services, and area hospitals rapidly worked in concert with the Digital Emergency Response Team to assess the situation and care for the injured."
The construction site has been temporarily closed to investigate the cause of the accident. Ongoing operations at Digital's Hudson, Mass., semiconductor engineering and manufacturing facilities, including Alpha AXP production, are not affected. The Alpha AXP family of microprocessors is currently fabricated in existing facilities in Hudson and in South Queensferry, Scotland. The building under construction is scheduled to come on-line in 1996.
