DIGITAL TO PROVIDE SERVICE FOR POLAROID'S NEW HELIOS LASER MEDICAL IMAGING SYSTEMS IN EUROPE

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., and PARIS, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Polaroid Corporation (NYSE: PRD) today announced that Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE: DEC) will provide technical service and support in selected European countries for Polaroid's new Helios Laser System for medical diagnostic imaging.
The agreement marks another strategic step by the Polaroid Medical Imaging Systems (PMIS) division to sell and support Helios systems worldwide. Helios, a revolutionary digital laser imager and "dry- process" film system for such high-resolution imaging applications as nuclear medicine and ultrasound, will begin shipping in Europe early in the fourth quarter of this year.
Under the agreement, Digital's European network of field engineers will provide installation, maintenance, and hardware and software support services for Helios systems in Germany, France, Italy and the United Kingdom, with possible extensions to other European countries in 1994.
"This agreement with Digital adds a powerful new dimension to our worldwide service strategy to provide Helios customers with the fastest possible response and highest quality support," said Brian Hill, director of PMIS Worldwide Technical Service. "Digital brings extensive European field engineering operations, more than 30 years of experience in new technologies and computer networking, an enviable record of customer satisfaction, and an excellent reputation in the medical market."
Gianni Messora, Digital's European vice president for Multivendor Customer Services, said, "This agreement strengthens Digital's commitment to the healthcare market by providing the highest level of support to the recognized leaders in the market. We see Helios as a true innovation in the medical imaging sector of the market, which is undergoing very significant technological evolution and presenting promising potential for growth. We believe that the association of Polaroid and Digital will send a very powerful message to the marketplace, thus enhancing both companies' positions."
The Helios Laser Imager produces high-quality 8"x10" radiographic films without using wet chemical processing or darkrooms. Helios combines extremely high-resolution lasers and a unique rendering technique to generate consistently precise digital images onto a unique carbon-based film in about 90 seconds. Helios Dry Film is not sensitive to light, eliminating wet chemical processing, darkrooms and cassettes, as well as the operating costs and hazards associated with the use and disposal of wet chemicals.
PMIS reached a major milestone in March, 1993 with the first U.S. customer shipments of Helios. Picker Service, a division of Picker International, one of the world's leading medical equipment suppliers, provides technical services for Helios in the U.S.
