DIGITAL SYSTEMS, ACCELERATED PAYMENT SYSTEMS ANNOUNCE AGREEMENT TO MARKET AUTOMATED 'CHECK BY PHONE' PAYMENT METHOD

REDMOND, Wash., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Systems International Inc. (NASDAQ: DGTL) and Accelerated Payment Systems (APS) have entered into an agreement to jointly develop and market APS LINK, a software product that allows users to accept check payments over the telephone through the Voicelink(R) Intelligent Call Management system(TM), Digital Systems said today.
"This partnership and product should help our customers increase their cash flow. Collection agencies can use APS LINK with their Voicelink systems to receive immediate payments, rather than waiting for a check or money order to arrive in the mail," said Jack Praino, Digital Systems director of Corporate Marketing. "Telemarketing and mail order operations can offer it as an alternate payment method, and orders are shipped more quickly because there's no wait for a check or money order."
Based in Cockeysville, Md., APS markets a patent-pending software product called APS CHECKS that allows organizations to accept check payments over the telephone. The process is simple: the customer gives a check number and account information to the telephone agent and authorizes the check for a specific amount. The information is input and transmitted to the APS service bureau, where a duplicate check is generated and deposited in the proper account. Security procedures include ABA number identification and independent written notification sent to the consumer every time a transaction is processed.
"APS CHECKS has been installed in over 37 client sites including Citibank, Bank of America, Sallie Mae, Discover Card and Federated Department Stores," said Tom Gillespie, APS president. "One major bank has already saved between $1 million and $3 million in write-offs through APS CHECKS. This unique process has helped spawn a new industry called electronic check debit processing."
APS LINK is a package that includes the APS CHECKS software and interfaces with Digital Systems' Voicelink product, which enhances the productivity and revenue-generating capabilities of inbound and outbound call centers by providing high-quality, low-cost automated telephone contacts with customers. APS LINK makes it possible for Voicelink users to process check payment information directly through their Voicelink systems, rather than manually recording the information and entering it separately into the APS CHECKS program. APS LINK will be available in June.
APS CHECKS, introduced in October 1992, was designed to offer a payment alternative to credit cards, money orders or wire services. It is quickly receiving wide acceptance in the collections, mail order, telemarketing and fundraising industries, according to Gillespie.
APS is a division of National Credit Management Corp. (NCMC). One of the largest receivables management companies in the country, NCMC uses the Voicelink system in its collections environment. Digital Systems International Inc. is based in Redmond and has sales offices throughout the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan and Australia.
