DIGITAL EQUIPMENT PLAYS MAJOR ROLE IN SHAPING FINDINGS ON HDTV INTEROPERABILITY

MARLBORO, Mass., Nov. 30 ~PRNewswire~ -- Digital Equipment Corp. (NYSE: DEC) today helped to lay the groundwork for dramatically changing the way in which people will view computers and televisions in the future with its endorsement of a set of findings issued today from the deliberations on a U.S. HDTV standard that bears much of the computer vendor's imprint.
Specifically, Digital announced its support for the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) "Advisory Committee on Advanced Television Services" (ACATS) findings on "Interoperability, Extensibility, and Scope of Features and Services," many of which were founded on Digital's articulation of the computer industry's vision. These findings underscore the implications associated with the move to digital processing and communications, and will provide both the consumer and business with broad access to the type of interactive information that is associated today only with computer technology.
"These issues go far beyond simple computer compatibility. These recommendations will determine the speed at which HDTV will be adopted, the longevity of the standard, and the potential future applications of HDTV," said Martin Hoffmann, vice president and general counsel for Digital Equipment.
"Digital's expertise in silicon design, networking and digital systems puts us in a strong position to help steer the convergence of TV, communications and computers, as well as those standards necessary to make it happen," continued Hoffman.
Richard Wiley, chairman of the ACATS committee chartered by the FCC to advance a universal HDTV standard based on interoperability and extensibility, said, "The interoperability review panel provided the advisory committee with important information on the interaction of proposed HDTV systems with cable, computers, and other non-broadcast media. I am grateful for the hard work of the panel members, including Digital's Branko Gerovac."
