DIGITAL EQUIPMENT PC ADS TO SET STAGE FOR EXPANDING MARKETS; Y AND R CAMPAIGN SET TO BREAK IN MAJOR PRINT, TV MEDIA

MAYNARD, Mass., Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- In support of record growth in PC sales and an expanding product line, the Personal Computer Business Unit of Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE: DEC) is launching an aggressive new advertising campaign. The campaign will help Digital, which more than doubled its PC revenues in 1993, continue its move into the top tier of the PC market by 1995.
Scheduled to break today, this ad campaign is among the most aggressive in the PC category and is the first from the Digital PC unit's new agency, Young and Rubicam. The ads, designed to extend Digital's positive identity among PC users, are intended to aid awareness of the Digital brand among both mainstream corporate PC users and new targets in its expanding sales channels market.
The main theme stressed in the campaign, "Beyond the Box," communicates the key differences that set Digital apart from its competition and play on the company's heritage of engineering excellence and superior quality and service. According to Harry Copperman, Digital's vice president for U.S. PC Sales and Marketing, "The advertising builds a personality and attitude for Digital's PC business, while at the same time showcases Digital's strength in product reliability, service, support, networking and quality."
The print campaign includes an intense schedule of newspapers and business publications such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Forbes, Business Week and U.S. News and World Report, in addition to an aggressive buy in computer trade publications. Television commercials will be aired for the first time on cable networks such as CNN, A&E, CNBC, TBS and SCI-FI.
Digital Equipment Corporation is the world's leader in open client/server solutions from personal computers to integrated worldwide information systems. Digital's Alpha AXP platforms, storage, networking, software and services, together with industry-focused solutions from business partners, help organizations compete and win in today's global marketplace.
