MAYNARD, Mass., June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE: DEC) today announced the acquisition of BASYS Automation Systems, from Independent Television News (ITN).
BASYS is the worldwide leader in broadcast automation, and has pioneered integrated newsroom automation, station operation and resource management systems.
"This is a strategic move for Digital as we pursue an aggressive growth strategy for the media industry and the broadcast market in particular," said Bob Farquhar, Digital's Media Business Unit vice president. "BASYS is a major force in the television, radio and cable markets. With this acquisition we are sending a clear signal about the depth of our commitment to the industry."
Farquhar added, "The BASYS acquisition also significantly enhances our industry expertise which is critical to our success in providing comprehensive, value-added solutions to broadcasters. Also, this helps us participate in the high growth, software and services revenue potential in media."
Dave Lyon, CEO of BASYS Automation Systems added, "Digital's major investments in research and development, especially in OPEN systems and networking, will enable BASYS to advance our product development efforts at an even more aggressive pace. Digital and BASYS will collaborate on new applications for the broadcast industry applying such technologies as voice recognition, FDDI and Digital's recently announced Intelligent Building products.
Lyon continued, "I see tremendous benefits for our customers given the closer ties we will have with Digital. As BASYS moves into new areas such as multimedia workstations and databases, close cooperation with Digital's advanced research efforts will allow us to apply evolving technologies even faster.
"Add to this Digital's global service organization offering system integration and facilities management, and you begin to realize the scale of the benefits BASYS and our users will obtain from the partnership," he added.
Digital's Farquhar said that BASYS would be run as a wholly owned subsidiary within Digital, as part of the worldwide Media Industry Business Unit.
Farquhar concluded, "In the future, as HDTV becomes a reality and we move towards the age of 'telecomputing,' the combination of Digital's networking strengths and BASYS knowledge and experience will enable us to continue on a path of market leadership.
