DIGITAL ANNOUNCES INITIAL ALPHA AXP CHANNELS; AGGRESSIVE $4,999 PRICING OF DECpc AXP 150 SYSTEMS, AND NEW WINDOWS NT SOFTWARE FOR ALPHA AXP

MAYNARD. Mass. -- Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE: DEC) today announced the kickoff of its certification program to qualify channel members with the installation and support capabilities necessary to resell the DECpc AXP 150 running Microsoft's Windows NT in client/server environments.
MicroAge Computer Centers of Tempe, Ariz.; Ingram Micro, of Santa Ana, Calif.; Avnet Computer of Culver City, Calif.; Pioneer Standard of Cleveland, Ohio; Pioneer Technologies Group of Gaithersburg, Md.; and Wyle Computer Products Division of Wyle Laboratories of Irvine, Calif., are being certified as the first channel organizations in Digital's DECpc AXP personal computer certification program.
MicroAge is currently an authorized aggregator/corporate dealer for Digital's entire PC line, and Ingram is an authorized wholesaler/master reseller of Digital's peripherals and networking products. Avnet, Pioneer Standard, Pioneer Technologies, and Wyle are authorized industrial distributors of Digital's product line, including personal computers and workstations.
"Developing mutually beneficial and successful relationships with our channels partners is important to Digital," said Harry Copperman, Vice President of U.S. Sales and Marketing for Digital's Personal Computer Business Unit. "Our initial selection focused on two criteria: experience with Windows NT and client/server environments, and the ability to implement a reseller certification program for first tier dealers and Value Added Resellers. These firms, along with the proven abilities of their many dealers and Value Added Resellers, will significantly help to expand the penetration of the DECpc AXP 150 Personal Computer in the client/server marketplace. We expect to qualify other channel partners shortly, and further expand the number over the next year, as the availability of Windows NT applications continues to increase."
Digital also announced that with the addition of the DECpc XL series to its Premium Line of personal computers last week, the company is adjusting the price of all configurations of the DECpc AXP 150 family, offering workstation performance at PC prices. The entry configuration is now $4,999, and includes a 150 MHz 21064 AXP RISC processor; Windows NT operating system factory installed with documentation; 512K bytes of cache memory; a 245-Mbyte hard disk drive; 16 Mbytes of memory; a 3 1/2- inch 2.88 Mbyte floppy disk drive; six EISA slots; two serial ports and one parallel port; a Compaq QVision graphics option; an Adaptec EISA SCSI adapter; keyboard, mouse, and documentation.
At the same time, the company announced that three additional software applications will be ported to Alpha AXP and Windows NT. Autodesk Inc. has committed to port both its AutoCAD and HyperChem applications in CY1994; and Intergraph will port MicroStation in CY1994.
According to Jesse Lipcon, Digital's Vice President of Systems Marketing, "The software porting for the Alpha version of Windows NT continues to gain momentum. These leading applications join the growing list of over 600 software packages that will be ported to the Alpha AXP Windows NT platform. We expect over 300 of those applications to be shipping by the end of the year."
