DIGIBOARD INTRODUCES X.25 SYNCHRONOUS ADAPTER; INTELLIGENT BOARD LINKS NETWORK VIA LOW-COST, HIGH-PERFORMANCE X.25 LINES

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- DigiBoard, the leading provider of connectivity solutions for microcomputer systems, today introduced the DigiBoard Synchronous Adapter for X.25, an intelligent, high-speed serial communications board that provides X.25 Public Data Network (PDN) connections for Novell NetWare LANs and WANs. The Synchronous Adapter transmits information between NetWare communications servers and local and remote clients and lets users benefit from the low cost, high reliability and worldwide compatibility of the X.25 protocol.
The DigiBoard Synchronous Adapter is equipped with its own 20 MHz reduced-instruction-set-computing (RISC) processor and performs at speeds up to T1/E1. The product features X.25 communications software that provides packet assembly/disassembly (PAD) on the board, which minimizes system CPU overhead. Up to 255 sessions or virtual circuits are possible in a single host.
European demand for X.25 products to interconnect LANs and WANs is substantial. On the European continent, more than 50 percent of LAN sites plan to utilize X.25 for LAN communications. In the United States, X.25 is a stable, mature technology which continues to maintain market share over newer systems.
"X.25 continues to be a popular method of connecting LANs and WANs, even as newer technologies such as frame relay and ISDN become more common," said John Gaylord, DigiBoard product manager. "We will work with industry leaders including Novell and Microsoft to provide software interfaces to DigiBoard's X.25 WAN connectivity products, and to meet the needs of X.25 users worldwide," Gaylord said.
X.25 benefits include performance of up to 19.2 Kbps, which is faster than most of today's modem links. X.25 is a cost-effective transmission method because PDNs are accessed through the local telephone company with costs based on the number of data packets transmitted instead of on actual long distance connect time. Furthermore, X.25 is highly reliable with error-correction capabilities to maintain superior data integrity even when line quality varies, as it often does in international networking.
One of the most attractive features of X.25 for network users is its worldwide compatibility. Any location in the world is accessible through X.25, even in areas where phone lines are scarce or international borders must be crossed.
The DigiBoard Synchronous Adapter for X.25 fits a standard expansion slot in the LAN communications server or multiuser host. It will be available for the ISA, EISA and Micro Channel platforms, and will ship with drivers for Novell NetWare applications such as NACS, NetWare Access Services 1.3x, NetWare Global MHS, and NetWare for SAA, all using Novell's AIO specifications.
The product includes hardware, software and cabling. It is equipped with a 20 MHz IDT 3051 RISC processor and two RS-422 synchronous serial ports, each supporting bidirectional communication rates up to 2,048 Mbps. The board offers 1,024K of RAM and 32K of memory address window, and it supports seven software selectable shared IRQs. The Synchronous Adapter complies with CCITT X.3, X.28, X.25 and X.29 standards.
The Synchronous Adapter for X.25 will be available in September for $1,995 and will be covered by DigiBoard's five-year warranty and service and technical support programs. The board will be on display for the first time at INTEROP Fall, August 25-27, in booth 6384.
DigiBoard, a division of Digi International (NASDAQ: DGII), manufactures a suite of connectivity solutions for multiuser systems, LANs and WANs on the ISA, EISA, Micro Channel, SBus and NuBus platforms. DigiBoard markets its products through an international network of distributors.
