DIGIBOARD ANNOUNCES FAST, ECONOMICAL EIGHT-PORT INTELLIGENT SERIAL BOARD; PRODUCT PROVIDES PERFORMANCE TO 115Kbps

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- DigiBoard, the leading provider of connectivity solutions for multiuser computer systems, today announced the 8em, an eight-port modular intelligent serial board for ISA, EISA, and Micro Channel-bus computers. The 8em is the newest addition to DigiBoard's Xem Family of serial ports and supports eight simultaneous users connected to a host personal computer, providing sophisticated, economical, low-end connectivity for small workgroup environments.
The 8em is DigiBoard's first serial board with an optional parallel port installed on the PORTS/8em module. When a parallel port is required, such as for a printer, the DigiBoard PORTS/8emp connector module provides one in addition to its standard complement of eight RS-232 serial ports. The benefits of connecting a printer to the PORTS/8emp instead of the host computer's parallel printer port are speed and increased performance. The RISC processor on the 8em host adapter card relieves the host CPU of managing printer tasks.
The 8em gives users complete system flexibility by offering solutions in eight port increments. The product employs a reduced- instruction set computing (RISC) processor to provide performance of up to 115Kbps for multiuser applications. Its 115Kbps bidirectional capabilities make it ideal for attaching to high speed modems that require hardware handshaking at 115Kbps speeds. Each version of the 8em -- ISA, EISA, or Micro Channel -- features a host adapter card with its own 20 MHz IDT 3051 RISC processor, plus a PORTS/8em or 8emp connector module linked via a five-foot cable.
The complete DigiBoard Xem Family supports from eight to 64 users by connecting up to four PORTS/16em connector modules to the host adapter card that resides in the host PC. The product also includes DigiBoard's Front End Processor Operating System (FEP/OS), which delivers high performance by significantly reducing the host computer's CPU input/output (I/O) overhead.
"With the addition of the 8em, DigiBoard offers a solution for every conceivable network environment. No other multiuser product can match the performance levels offered by the Xem Family," said Joe Toste, DigiBoard product manager. "The 8em is a cost-effective solution for small to mid-sized workgroups that provides the required performance for demanding multiuser applications."
The 8em will be available in September. The board comes with the host adapter and module for $1,095 and with a parallel port connector for $1,295. The 8em is available for UNIX SVR4, SCO UNIX and XENIX, OS/2 Version 1.2, 2.0 and AIX.
