DIAMOND-STAR MOTORS QUALITY CIRCLE TEAM RECEIVES NATIONAL RECOGNITION

NORMAL, Ill., May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Accuracy and efficiency are key to producing quality products and these can be achieved easily if employees are encouraged to share their ideas. Through Quality Circles, Diamond-Star Motors (DSM) turns to its associates to develop ways to improve their work responsibilities and environment. Small teams work together to recognize a problem, develop a solution and present measurable results. The teams that complete and implement their improvements enter a DSM plant-wide competition. The winner represents DSM in a regional competition sponsored by the Association for Quality and Participation (AQP).
The Quality Circle team "The Robot Police" represented Diamond-Star Motors and was named the AQP Region 6 winner (regions are outlined by the first number in the zip code). They went on as one of the 18 nationwide finalists to compete at the AQP National Conference in New Orleans May 3-6. This marks the third consecutive year that a DSM Circle has been selected as an AQP regional winner and attended the national conference.
"The Robot Police" team has a robot in that area that applies hot butyl adhesive to the doors of the car. They were experiencing broken butyl tips which caused high expense and frequent line downtime. The group developed a new tip from a material that is flexible and will not break.
"It doesn't matter how good an individual is, it takes teamwork to get difficult problems solved," said Steve Martiens, a Robot Police member. "I wish everyone could have heard some of the conference speakers, they were very motivational."
Conference speakers included Joe Theismann, a former Washington Redskins quarterback and two-time pro-bowl player, who focused on his familiarity with teamwork and dedication to a job. He reminded everyone that "The word team means together everyone achieves more." In the area of customer satisfaction, Charles Garfield, a computer scientist on the Apollo Eleven project that sent the first men to the moon, asked the audience to remember that "No one cares what you know but wants to know you care."
AQP acknowledges any type of team such as quality circles, self- managed teams and task forces from a wide variety of corporations including automotive manufacturing facilities, communication companies, public service divisions and food and beverage distributors, just to name a few. Each team submits a videotape and notebook describing how the team successfully completed the project. There are over 10,000 AQP members nationwide.
Representatives from the four other DSM Gold Award-winning quality circles who presented at the plant-wide presentation also attended the conference.
Diamond-Star Motors, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Motors Corp., produces the Mitsubishi Eclipse, the Eagle Talon, the Plymouth Laser and the new 199a4 Mitsubishi Galant.
