DIAMOND SHAMROCK COMPLETES NEW MEXICO RETAIL STORE ACQUISITION

 ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Diamond Shamrock officials today announced the completion of the acquisition of 14 gasoline and convenience stores in New Mexico from Total Petroleum, Inc. Twelve of the stores are in Albuquerque, with one each in Santa Fe and Rio Rancho. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.
 Although the stores are currently branded "Vickers," they will begin operating immediately as Diamond Shamrock, open 24-hours with a full range of gasoline and convenience items, and the stores will take
Diamond Shamrock credit cards. The stores will be rebranded Diamond


Shamrock Corner Stores with the reidentification process expected to be complete this summer.
 All of the approximately 100 employees of the stores are expected to be employed by Diamond Shamrock.
 Diamond Shamrock Senior Vice President A.W. "Ed" O'Donnell explained that New Mexico is strategic to the location of the Diamond Shamrock refinery in the Texas Panhandle and its refined products pipeline and terminal system. "We are excited to gain this presence in New Mexico, and we look forward to serving our customers and growing our business in this important region," he said.
 Total Senior Vice President of Marketing, C. Gary Jones commented that the sale to Diamond Shamrock also fit into their strategic plan of consolidating markets in the Mid-Continent and Rocky Mountain region.
 Diamond Shamrock, Inc., (NYSE: DRM) headquartered in San Antonio, is a regional refiner and marketer of petroleum products. Diamond Shamrock, with sales of $2.6 billion, has two Texas refineries with a throughput capacity of 175,000 barrels per day and markets gasoline through approximately 2,000 Diamond Shamrock branded outlets in eight states.
