 DETROIT-BASED CROWLEY'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS
APPOINTS DENNIS CALLAHAN AS PRESIDENT AND CEO
DETROIT, Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of directors of Crowley, Milner and Company (Crowley's) (AMEX: COM) today announced the appointment of Dennis Callahan as the company's new president and chief executive officer.
Callahan will replace current President and CEO Andrew J. Soffel, who will officially retire in January of 1993. It was further announced that Soffel will continue as Crowley's chairman of the board and will work in the areas of mergers, acquisitions and investment capital. Soffel will also be available to work locally with Crowley's financial institutions.
In another move, the board retained New York-based investment banking firm, Pembridge Capital Inc. to seek equity capital, merger and/or acquisition candidates.
"Our search for a chief executive officer has led us to Mr. Callahan whose experience as a prominent leader in the moderate retail industry will be extremely beneficial to the strengthening and future growth of our company. All candidates considered for the position were excellent, and we wish to thank them for their support and interest in our Detroit- based 84-year-old Crowley's."
Soffel added, "Dennis will officially join us on Nov. 2, 1992. I know that I speak for the entire Crowley's organization when I say, 'welcome to our family.'"
Callahan, 48, began his retail career with Prange's in 1970 where he held buying jobs in misses and half-size dresses, junior dresses, coats, costume jewelry, fine jewelry, gloves and handbags.
From 1975-1978, he was a vice president and general merchandise manager with Miller and Rhodes in Richmond, Va., overseeing sportswear, dresses, coats, juniors, accessories, cosmetics, children's, shoes, small wares and intimate apparel.
From 1978-1985, he was a senior vice president of merchandise with Hecht-May in Washington, D.C., where he was responsible for accessories, cosmetics, shoes, intimate apparel and children's.
From 1985-1989, he was president and chief operating officer of The Bon Ton. During his period as president, the store sales, profits and gross margins showed significant increases.
From 1990 to date, he has been employed at Hess's as a senior vice president/general merchandise manager over dresses, coats, children's, cosmetics, shoes and intimate apparel.
Prior to his retailing career, Callahan spent four years in the Air Force. He graduated magna cum laude from Northern Michigan University.
Callahan is married and the father of four children.
