DETROIT NEWSPAPER AGENCY AND UNIONS AGREE TO EXTEND EXPIRATION DATES
 OF LABOR AGREEMENTS
DETROIT, May 2 /PRNewswire/ -- At the request of federal and state mediators, the Detroit Newspaper Agency and unions representing its employees have agreed to extend the expiration dates of their labor agreements until 6 p.m. Saturday, May 2.
The announcement came shortly after the two sides passed a midnight Friday contract deadline without reaching new agreements. It was the second contract extension in as many days.
Tim Kelleher, DNA senior vice president/labor relations, said talks with the Teamsters may continue into the early morning hours of Saturday. The other unions, he said, will return for talks beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.
The DNA prints, distributes and sells advertising for The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press under the terms of their Joint Operating Agreement.
The agency has reached tentative agreements with five unions, but lacks agreements with six other unions, including the Teamsters, mailers and pressmen.
The contracts affect nearly 2,700 employees of the DNA. The newspapers are holding separate talks with the Newspaper Guild, which represents news and editorial employees.
