DETROIT EDISON TO SUPPLY THE CHARGING STATIONS FOR FORD HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHALLENGE

DEARBORN, Mich., May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Detroit Edison (NYSE: DTE) is supplying charging stations for the "1993 Hybrid Electric Vehicle Challenge," a competition among 30 college teams to design and build high-caliber, practical hybrid electric vehicles.
The utility is an associate sponsor of the challenge, which is sponsored by Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F), the U.S. Department of Energy and the Society of Automotive Engineers. The competition consists of a series of events June 1-5 in Dearborn. Four teams from Michigan are competing.
Detroit Edison provided electric vehicle charging stations developed jointly by Ford, Square D. Co. and Hubbell, Inc., according to John Olsen, Detroit Edison's electric vehicle program manager.
"The HEV Challenge presents a unique and important opportunity to test how well the charging stations will perform in the future when they become integral parts of the infrastructure needed to accommodate drivers of electric vehicles," Olsen said.
The event marks the first time so many charging stations have been installed at one location, he said.
The HEV Challenge calls for teams to convert Ford Escort station wagons or construct vehicles from the ground up. Teams from Wayne State University and the Jordan College Energy Institute converted vehicles. New vehicles were built by Michigan State University and Lawrence Technological Institute.
Vehicles will be rated on their emissions, fuel efficiency, vehicle range, acceleration, driveability, design and cost, as well as the teams' oral presentations and written reports.
Some events, including a stop-and-go commuter driving test, will be open to the public Saturday, June 5. Additionally, Detroit Edison will feature a booth with a Ford Ecostar electric van, as well as displays of historical electric vehicles, home charging stations and "park and charge" meters. Winners of the challenge will be announced at a banquet later that day.
Following the HEV Challenge, Detroit Edison will install the charging stations in its parking lots and provide some to commercial businesses participating in the Ford Ecostar demonstration program.
Detroit Edison will have the only fleet of Ford Ecostar electric vans in Michigan as part of the automaker's 30-month demonstration program which begins later this year. The utility will lease part of its fleet of electric vans to commercial businesses during the program.
Ford asked Detroit Edison to participate in the HEV event because of the utility's extensive experience with electric vehicle technology, according to Olsen.
In 1982, Detroit Edison engineers developed a unique "park and charge" charging station which was operated by a credit card and controlled by a small computer.
"Additionally, Detroit Edison has 700,000 miles of electric vehicle road experience, including two major demonstration programs with the U.S. Department of Energy in the 1980s," Olsen said.
