DETROIT EDISON SETS MARCH-APRIL LINE CLEARANCE SCHEDULE

DETROIT, March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Detroit Edison (NYSE: DTE) line clearance crews will continue projects as well as begin new work in 47 communities in March and April as part of the utility's continued emphasis on preventing power outages.
This is the third year of an accelerated program to improve electric service in Detroit Edison's southeastern Michigan service area.
The program is part of the company's $236 million reliability improvement plan to reduce the number of power outages and storm damage restoration times.
Line clearance is aimed at maintaining 10-foot clearances between tree branches and wires. An accelerated tree trimming schedule and other improvement projects in Detroit Edison's southeastern Michigan service area have reduced the number of outages 27 percent and the length of outages 65 percent compared to the averages of the previous three years.
"We have definitely established a correlation between tree trimming and our ability to provide safe, reliable electric service," said Robert J. Buckler, senior vice president, Energy Marketing and Distribution.
"Our efforts have started to pay off for our customers in the form of fewer and shorter outages."
From 1991 through 1993, Detroit Edison will have spent $101 million on line clearance to prevent trees from growing into electrical wires, which is a major source of outages especially during wind and ice storms.
All work is performed by professional line clearance crews. Trees are trimmed according to National Arborist Association standards, which are designed to protect the trees and keep them healthy.
The utility's reliability improvement program also includes adding lightning protection and new circuits, and replacing worn or damaged equipment. A new customer communication center and toll-free telephone number -- 1-800-477-4747 -- also were established within the last year.
During March and April, line clearance work will continue or begin in the following areas:
Ingham County: White Oak Township, Williamston.
