DETROIT EDISON SALES DOWN IN JUNE, FLAT FOR FIRST HALF
DETROIT, July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Depressed by cool weather and

reduced steel production, Detroit Edison (NYSE: DTE) system sales fell to 3.40 billion kilowatthours (kWh) in June, an 8.8-percent drop from June 1991. Despite this, system sales rose slightly -- by 0.4 percent -- to 20.1 billion kWh for the first half of the year compared with the same period in 1991.
 The June sales report included:
-- A 3.3-percent increase in industrial sales for the first half, reflecting a slowly improving economy, despite a 4.2-percent drop last month.
-- A 1.7-percent increase in sales to automotive customers for the first half and a 1.2-percent increase for the month, helped by the opening of Chrysler's new Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit and technology center in Auburn Hills.
-- A 5.9-percent increase in sales to steel customers for the first half, as steel fabricators worked to meet automakers' demands.
Residential sales reflected the unseasonably cool weather, particularly compared to last June, dropping 21.5 percent for the month. For the first six months of 1992, residential sales were down 4.1 percent. Similarly, commercial sales fell 7.4 percent in June and were nearly steady for the half. Commercial sales increases had accounted for the bulk of the company's sales growth in recent years.
Total June sales -- including sales to other utilities -- declined 7.9 percent to 3.65 billion kWh.
