DETROIT EDISON POSTS JULY SALES INCREASE

DETROIT, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Weather and economic activity in southeastern Michigan heated up in July, helping to boost Detroit Edison (NYSE: DTE) electricity sales 16.5 percent.
System sales of 4 billion kilowatthours (kWh) were recorded in July, compared with 3.5 billion kWh posted in the same month last year during an unseasonably cool summer.
Sales to all major customer categories rose last month, with a 31.5-percent jump in residential sales leading the advance as customers cranked up air conditioners to battle the heat. Residential sales totaled 1.3 billion kWh last month, up from year-ago sales of 951.2 million kWh.
An all-time hourly peak demand record for July was set on the 28th with 9.04 million kilowatts (kW) sold as temperatures soared into the 90s. The utility's all-time hourly peak demand record for any month is 9.13 million kW, set Aug. 2, 1988.
Sales to commercial customers last month rose 5.9 percent from last year to 822.4 million kWh, while industrial sales rose 13 percent to 1.8 billion kWh in July as factory production increased.
Total sales for the month -- including sales to other utilities -- increased 9 percent to 4.3 billion kWh compared with the same month last year.
Year-to-date through July, the company's sales in southeastern Michigan were up 5.3 percent from the first seven months of 1992 -- 24.8 billion kWh in 1993 compared with 23.5 billion kWh last year.
