DETROIT EDISON NAMES NEW PRESIDENT

DETROIT, Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Detroit Edison (NYSE: DTE) announced today that Anthony F. Earley Jr. will join the company March 1 as president, chief operating officer and director. Earley has held the same positions with the Long Island Lighting Company (LILCO) of Hicksville, N.Y., since 1989.
John E. Lobbia, who formerly held the position of Detroit Edison president, continues as chairman and chief executive officer.
Lobbia said, "We are pleased to have a man of Tony Earley's stature and capabilities join our company. He has built an impressive record as a highly capable manager, innovative businessman and a person dedicated to serving utility customers in an outstanding manner."
Earley, 44, is an attorney and engineer who learned the nuclear power business during a five-year naval career, most of it as an officer on the USS Hawkbill, a nuclear attack submarine. He holds a bachelor of science degree in physics, a master of science in engineering and a juris doctor degree (summa cum laude), all from the University of Notre Dame. The master's and law degrees followed his naval service. He was with Hunton & Williams, a leading Richmond, Va., law firm, from 1979 until 1985 as a member of the firm's energy and environmental team, working largely with nuclear licensing and safety issues.
A native of Garden City, Long Island, Earley joined LILCO in 1985 as general counsel and in 1988 was named executive vice president with responsibility for many of the company's operating areas. In April 1989, he was elected president and chief operating officer.
He has been active in community affairs and is a director of Mutual of America and the Empire State Electric Energy Research Corporation and a member of the Executive Committee of the New York Power Pool, which he served as chairman in 1991-92, and the New York Gas Group.
Earley is married and has four children.
