DETROIT EDISON AUGUST SALES REFLECT COOL WEATHER
 DETROIT, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Detroit Edison's (NYSE: DTE)

electricity sales dropped nearly 8 percent in August from a year ago, reflecting factory slowdowns and unseasonably cool weather.
All classes of customers -- including residential, commercial and industrial -- used less electricity than in the same month last year, with their combined total down 7.7 percent.
Residential and commercial customers typically drive summer electricity sales with the use of air conditioning and cooling equipment. With 66 percent fewer cooling degree days last month compared with August 1991, residential sales of 917 million kilowatthours (kWh) were off 18 percent and commercial sales of 735 million kWh were down 7.6 percent.
Industrial sales totaled 1.64 billion kWh -- a 4-percent decline from August 1991 -- reflecting reduced production at auto and steel plants.
Total August sales -- including sales to other utilities -- fell 7 percent to 3.92 billion kWh.
Year-to-date system sales in southeastern Michigan through August totaled 27.09 billion kWh, down 2.4 percent from the 27.75 billion kWh in the first eight months of 1991. Total sales for the period were 29.4 billion kWh, compared with 31.43 billion kWh during the first eight months of 1991.
