DETROIT EDISON'S FERMI 2 POWER PLANT RESTARTS

NEWPORT, Mich., Nov. 20 ~PRNewswire~ -- Detroit Edison (NYSE: DTE) today restarted its Fermi 2 nuclear power plant two days after three feedwater heater pumps shut down automatically as designed following a sudden pressure drop on a system which condenses steam leaving the turbine generator and recirculates water to the reactor.
Operators shut the plant down Wednesday when normal water flow to the reactor vessel was momentarily interrupted. Backup safety systems immediately restored water flow to the vessel. The shutdown was classified as an Unusual Event, the lowest of four emergency classifications used by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. There was never any danger to the public or plant employees, nor any damage to plant systems.
Plant officials said the momentary pressure drop resulted when an operator inadvertently opened an inlet valve on one of eight filter demineralizers which remove impurities from the water.
Except for a two-month refueling outage, the plant has operated at nearly 100 percent capacity all year.
