DETROIT DIESEL AND PERKINS GROUP EXTEND AGREEMENT

DETROIT DIESEL AND PERKINS GROUP EXTEND AGREEMENT
DETROIT, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Detroit Diesel Corporation and

Perkins Group announced today they are extending their North American joint venture diesel engine agreement through June 1996.
The original agreement, whereby Detroit Diesel markets a range of Perkins automotive, industrial, marine, and military engines in North
America, has proven extremely beneficial to both companies. The joint venture has resulted in attracting new customers and providing improved services to existing customers, primarily due to a new and improved distributor network.
As part of the extension of the agreement, both companies have agreed to continue emphasis on product engineering and evolution of the popular line of Perkins engines to maintain product leadership and meet future emission requirements in North America.
"We have made a great deal of progress since the initial agreement was announced and we are now working on achieving even further improvements," said Detroit Diesel Corporation Chairman and CEO Roger Penske. "We have set out to achieve the very best in customer service. This includes the availability of a range of products from five to 2,400 horsepower, through the development of one of the most comprehensive diesel parts and aftermarket services in the world."
One example of Detroit Diesel's and Perkins' commitment to customer service is a faster response time on customer parts orders. Instead of Perkins parts being ordered from the U.K., beginning in early 1992, 700 of the fastest-moving Perkins parts will be stocked at the Detroit Diesel Parts Distribution Center in Canton, Ohio. This will provide overnight availability for any of these parts anywhere in North America.
Perkins Group of Companies is a business of Varity Corporation (NSYE: VAT), with worldwide operations in diesel engines, farm and industrial equipment, automotive components, fluid power systems and venture capital investments.
Detroit Diesel Corporation manufactures and markets engines ranging from five to 2,400 horsepower. Detroit Diesel engines currently provide dependable power for a wide variety of construction, industrial, generator set, agricultural, marine, truck, bus and military applications throughout the world.
