DETROIT CITY COUNCIL APPROVES NEW ROUTE FOR 15TH ANNUAL DETROIT FREE PRESS/MAZDA INTERNATIONAL MARATHON

DETROIT CITY COUNCIL APPROVES NEW ROUTE
FOR 15TH ANNUAL DETROIT FREE PRESS/MAZDA INTERNATIONAL MARATHON
DETROIT, July 16 /PRNewswire/ -- City officials gave a present to Detroit runners in the 15th year of the Detroit Free Press/Mazda International Marathon: a new route.
"We hope to show off some of downtown Detroit's best neighborhoods," said Neal Shine, publisher of the Free Press, "and we're glad the city is going along with us."
The smoother, more scenic route for the 15th annual Free Press/Mazda Marathon, Oct. 18, also features a new finish line on Hart Plaza, instead of the historic Belle Isle Casino. Race organizers hope the new site will encourage more spectators to cheer the runners in the 26.2-mile race.
Many of the traditions of the race are being retained, however. The 8 a.m. start still will be at Jackson Park in Windsor, Ontario; racing's only underwater mile still will run through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel; split times and aid stations will be every mile; morale stations and sound zones still will line the course; and Belle Isle will be included in the route.
The route also will take runners north on Woodward to the Cultural Center, along the scenic Detroit River through Rivertown, beside the condos and apartments of Lafayette Park, through Harmonie and Grand Circus parks and, of course, beside the Canadian banks of the Detroit River in Windsor.
Shine also noted that the Motor City Striders, host running club of the Free Press/Mazda Marathon, is presenting its 30th annual marathon in Detroit.
Mazda (North America), Inc. is co-sponsor of the Detroit race for the third year. This will be the 10th year that Wright & Filippis of Rochester sponsors the wheelchair competition, which has one of the largest fields in the nation. Health Alliance Plan is a new sponsor of the Health & Fitness Expo, scheduled Oct. 16-17 at the Westin Hotel.
The Motor City Sole Stampede, sponsored by the Michigan Podiatric Medical Association, and Prego Spaghetti Dinner are Saturday events that will continue in their downtown Detroit locations.
Known primarily as a local runners' race, the Free Press/Mazda Marathon nevertheless offers total prizes of more than $35,000. Male and female winners in the open class each receive $5,000; master's winners each receive $2,000.
