DETROIT BOARD OF EDUCATION PRESIDENT ISSUES STATEMENT

DETROIT BOARD OF EDUCATION PRESIDENT ISSUES STATEMENT
DETROIT, Aug. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Detroit Board of Education

President Frank Hayden welcomed Gov. John Engler's interest in averting an illegal walkout by the Detroit Federation of Teachers.
"While I am not sure that the state should get involved in the specific lawsuit filed by a number of parents of our students, I believe his comments with regard to state law should clearly establish the illegality of a strike. And that in itself is a positive contribution to public awareness," Hayden said.
Hayden also said that the governor's statement that "Michigan children should always be our No. 1 priority" is in line with the "children first" concept that has been the basis of all board decisions and positions.
Engler also expressed concern over the "irreparable harm" that an illegal strike would do to the children. Hayden said that the irreparable harm goes well beyond the children.
"An illegal walkout could imperil the millage vote in November. It will cost parents money for unanticipated daycare or force them to stay home to care for their children. It will cost the taxpayers millions of educational dollars, while no education is taking place," Hayden said.
"The board is ready and willing to negotiate and educate at the same time. The law requires it, and concern for children demands it," Hayden concluded.
