DETROIT AREA BUSINESS ACTIVITY INDEX RISES ONE POINT FOR AUGUST
DETROIT, Sept. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- In August, the Detroit Area Business Activity Index (DABAI) rose one point to a level of 149, compared with 148 in July. This is the fifth consecutive month of improvement for the Detroit-area economy and places the index three points (or 1.9 percent) above the figure for August of last year.
During August, good gains in motor vehicle output and electric power consumption more than offset the weakness in auto sales and financial activity. Year-to-date, for the first eight months of 1992, the local economy is up 7.8 percent.
Comerica Bank compiles the Detroit Area Business Activity Index monthly from eight different measures of regional activity which are seasonally adjusted, corrected for inflation, and expressed as an index with 1982 as base year equal to 100. The Economics Department of Comerica Bank has calculated the DABAI monthly since 1957, depicting metropolitan Detroit's economy over seven full swings of the U.S. business cycle.
