DESKTOP DATA AND QUOTRON SYSTEMS ANNOUNCE
AGREEMENT TO LINK NEWSEDGE/UNIX AND QUOTRON TSS
WALTHAM, Mass., Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Desktop Data, Inc. and Quotron Systems, Inc. today announced plans to integrate advanced news and quotation capabilities on UNIX/Motif financial workstations. The agreement calls for joint development of a tightly integrated link between Desktop Data's newly announced NewsEDGE/UNIX product and Quotron's Trading Support System (TSS) on the same UNIX/Motif workstations and local area networks (LANs). The new financial workstation capabilities will be targeted to traders, institutional sales executives and money managers and will be jointly marketed by both companies.
NewsEDGE/UNIX and Quotron TSS products were developed according to industry standards in the open architecture of the UNIX/Motif environment, enabling customers to develop their own proprietary applications. Using the products' application programming interfaces (APIs), customers can build their own unique news-quotation linkages and create proprietary trading systems based on the combination of news, prices and other market data.
Bill Rothfarb, vice president at First Boston Corporation, is a customer of both NewsEDGE and TSS. "We have used both products separately and we encouraged Desktop Data to create a UNIX/Motif product so that we could combine their capabilities. I am delighted both with the announcement of NewsEDGE/UNIX and particularly with the announcement of this agreement with Quotron."
NewsEDGE products process the entire text of news stories from a wide range of news providers and alert customers when user-selected words or phrases appear in a breaking story. NewsEDGE allows traders to go beyond news monitoring constrained by ticker symbol, to include the monitoring of industries, market conditions, product announcements, world events and other user-defined categories. Furthermore, subscribers have access to more than 100 news wires, including those of the Associated Press, Dow Jones, Knight-Ridder, Reuters and specialized industry and international sources.
"Today's agreement will result in significant added value for our customers by delivering advanced news monitoring capabilities and by providing the tools to create virtually unlimited proprietary applications," said Donald L. McLagan, president of Desktop Data, Inc. "NewsEDGE allows traders to quickly and comprehensively monitor multiple news wires in multiple dimensions. By building their own interest profiles, traders can stay better informed and react more quickly."
Quotron TSS is a flexible system for processing and distributing element- and page-based real-time data and news from multiple sources. The system integrates multi-source information into one standard-format database. It then distributes the data to workstations over a LAN for access by third-party or custom application programs for powerful real-time analysis.
"Building on the unique capabilities of TSS and NewsEDGE, we are jointly developing products designed specifically for the trading environment," said Eduard Berlin, vice president of Quotron Systems, Inc. "Both TSS and NewsEDGE offer highly reliable data distribution combined with the flexibility of open architecture in the UNIX environment. We expect these new products to significantly enhance a trader's ability to identify market opportunities."
Desktop Data will also be marketing NewsEDGE/UNIX independently and it will be available for customer testing in March. NewsEDGE/UNIX has been designed to meet the live news processing needs of customers who operate Sun SPARC, IBM RS/6000 and other UNIX/Motif workstations, as well as hybrid networks supporting both UNIX/Motif workstations and Windows- or DOS-based PCs. A server version of News/EDGE can also support executive information systems, electronic mail and software applications such as Lotus Notes. The commercial version of NewsEDGE/UNIX will be available in the second quarter of this year.
Desktop Data, Inc., based in Waltham, Mass., was founded in July 1988 with the goal of providing news processing to PCs in both the financial, government and corporate markets. Desktop Data shipped its flagship product, NewsEDGE, in December 1989. The privately held company employs 35 people and has offices in Waltham, New York, Chicago, Detroit and Los Angeles.
Quotron Systems, Inc., a subsidiary of Citicorp, is a leading global provider of financial information and trading systems.
