DER TO OPEN POOLS AND BEACHES AT 55 STATE PARKS THIS WEEKEND
HARRISBURG, Pa., May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The Department of Environmental Resources (DER) will open pools and beaches at 55 state parks Saturday, ushering in the start of the summer season.
"Swimming is a welcome addition to the many year-round activities that take place at state parks across the commonwealth," DER Deputy Secretary James Grace said. "The state parks offer superb outdoor recreation that is second to none."
State-operated swimming facilities will be open May 23-25 and the following weekend, May 30 and 31. Starting June 6, swimming facilities will be open daily through Labor Day. Parks with public beaches or pools are open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. unless otherwise posted.
All beaches in the state parks are free, as are pools at Bendigo, Blue Knob, Hyner Run, Mount Pisgah, Reeds Gap, Ryerson Station and Sizerville state parks.
Admission ranges from $1.75 to $3 at pools at Caledonia, Codorus, Cook Forest, Frances Slocum, French Creek, Lackawanna, Little Buffalo, Marsh Creek, Neshaminy and Nockamixon state parks. Reduced rates are available to campers, the handicapped and groups.
The opening of pools at Little Buffalo and Neshaminy may be delayed slightly, but park officials hope to complete repairs by the weekend. A swimming ban at Gifford Pinchot State Park continues while DER studies lake conditions that caused last year's outbreak of shigellosis, a gastrointestinal disease.
For more information on the resources and facilities at Pennsylvania's state parks, write to DER's Bureau of State Parks, P.O. Box 8551, Harrisburg, Pa., 17105-8551, or call the toll-free state parks hotline at 800-63-PARKS.
