DER ISSUES PERMITS FOR MORGANTOWN LANDFILL
CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The Department of

Environmental Resources (DER) today issued permits to Browning Ferris Industries Inc. (BFI) for the construction and operation of a 154-acre landfill in New Morgan Borough, Berks County. It will be called the Morgantown Landfill.
"The permits reflect Pennsylvania's stringent requirements for landfills," said DER Acting Regional Director John Kennedy. "This includes a double synthetic liner with a leachate collection, detection and treatment system."
Kennedy said the issue of mine subsidence related to the old Bethlehem Steel Grace Mines on the property was carefully reviewed by DER's Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation.
"Under the permit conditions, BFI is required to complete a mine subsidence survey twice a year and submit a report to the department," Kennedy said.
The Morgantown Landfill will be allowed to accept an average of 2,010 tons of trash per day. The volume limit will be increased to 5,210 tons per day if the city of Philadelphia revises its solid waste management plan to include the Morgantown Landfill. The landfill is a designated disposal site in the Berks County plan.
The waste management permit issued to BFI is valid for 10 years, and the water quality permit for five years.
