DER FINES MONTGOMERY COUNTY FIRM $85,000 FOR AIR POLLUTION
CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The Department of Environmental Resources (DER) today has fined a Montgomery County firm $85,000 for failing to comply with Pennsylvania's Air Pollution Control Act.
The National Label Co. in Whitemarsh Township agreed to pay the fine for failing to obtain from DER approval for installing a printing press and permits to operate the press.
Inks used with the press are a source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs react with sunlight to form ground-level ozone, a pollutant that can cause respiratory problems, particularly in children and older people.
The company contended that the press was not subject to DER's criteria requiring firms to use the best available technology to control air emissions.
"The Southeast Region is already out of compliance with federal ozone pollution limits," DER Regional Director Leon T. Gonshor said. "Although there have been no complaints regarding the operation, the company violated the law. In addition to bringing the company into compliance, enforcement of the act includes the recovery of monetary civil penalties."
The penalties were paid to the Clean Air Fund, which is used to support DER's air quality monitoring and enforcement efforts statewide.
