DER APPROVES EXPANSION OF POTTSTOWN LANDFILL
CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., June 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The Department of Environmental Resources (DER) today issued a permit to Waste Management Inc. to expand by 18 acres the Pottstown Landfill in West Pottsgrove Township, Montgomery County, and Douglass Township, Berks County.
"The permit includes provisions to ensure the safe operation of the facility," acting DER Regional Director John Kennedy said. "For example, the permit calls for 14 groundwater monitoring points and an improved gas management system for odor control."
Kennedy said the permit will increase the size of the landfill to 196 acres, but will reduce by 39 percent the average amount of trash the landfill is allowed to accept each day, from 5,333 to 3,260 tons.
"While the expansion is necessary because the landfill is nearing maximum capacity, we determined that trash volumes should be lowered to reflect the amounts of waste designated for the facility in county waste plans," Kennedy said.
The Pottstown Landfill is the primary disposal site listed in the 10-year Montgomery County solid waste management plan. It also appears in the plans for Bucks, Chester and Philadelphia counties.
Kennedy said DER considered numerous comments from the public during its review of Waste Management Inc.'s application to expand the landfill.
