DEPECHE MODE; Albums to choose.

ENJOYING Depeche Mode but need a crash course on where to start with their back catalogue? Here Record music editor John Dingwall delivers up four of the previous albums that got the electronica giants to where they are today.

Speak & Spell

The 1981 debut album hurled fresh-faced Depeche Mode into the charts. Songs such as Just Can't Get Enough and New Life seem a million miles away from the muscle-bound electronica of today.

Black Celebration

No longer the teen idols when they first arrived, this 1986 album showed Mode turning their back on their pop roots to deliver a darker sound that would be a shape of things to come. Dressed In Black and A Question Of Lust being cases in point.

Violator

Martin Gore wrote all the tracks as Depeche Mode came of age with an album in 1990 that featured three of their all-time greatest hits - Personal Jesus, Policy Of Truth and Enjoy The Silence.

Sounds Of The Universe

Mode's last album in 2009 cemented their status as synth-rock survivors and featured three bona-fide singles - Wrong, Peace and a double A-sided Fragile Tension/Hole to Feed.
