DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO CHECK PGW SAFETY

PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- This morning, two representatives of the U.S. Department of Transportation, Office of Pipeline Safety, met with City Controller Jonathan A. Saidel.
They informed him that the department was responding to his request and immediately beginning an investigation of the Philadelphia Gas Works' emergency response procedures during the current work stoppage.
Acting in his capacity as city controller and also as a member of the Philadelphia Gas Commission, Saidel had requested an independent investigation into complaints he had received from the public. These complaints allege that public safety was being compromised because inexperienced crews, staffed by management personnel, were being dispatched to investigate and correct gas related problems. "I wanted an independent assessment of the potential danger to the public caused by PGW's response to this labor dispute," said Saidel.
At the Monday morning meeting, the federal officials told the controller that they will immediately begin on-site inspections to determine if PGW management possess the necessary qualifications and training to deal with gas problems. They will also review whether PGW is adhering to its written procedures when dispatching work crews. Following their investigation, the agency will provide a written report to the controller.
"I want to thank Senator Harris Wofford and Congressman Lucien Blackwell for making the Department of Transportation respond to my request for this inspection," commented Saidel. "As soon as I receive the final report, I will make it available to the public."
