DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE BUILDING

SACRAMENTO, Calif., April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- In a move designed to save California taxpayers millions of dollars, the Department of General Services today announced a developer has been selected to build a new facility for the Headquarters for the State Attorney General.
General Services Director John Lockwood today announced OPUS Southwest Corp. has been awarded the contract to build the new state facility. Lockwood pointed out building the new facility and exercising the purchase option will save taxpayers money because it builds equity in the facility over 20 years. The cost of renewing the existing leases and acquiring space to meet future expansion needs would approximate the cost of payments to purchase the building over 20 years. The state saves nearly $60,000,000 in today's dollars by purchasing the facility rather than continuing to lease.
"Clearly, the fact that the Attorney General's office has become scattered in four different locations indicates the need for consolidation in one facility," said Lockwood. "What we have accomplished benefits every California taxpayer. We have taken advantage of the current real estate market to obtain a value that will allow the state to acquire a new facility at about the same out-of- pocket cost as remaining in leased facilities, while building equity worth $60,000,000 in today's dollars."
The facility will create much needed construction jobs in Sacramento and result in creation of additional jobs through purchase of materials and services required to construct the new building. Approximately 1,700 state employees will occupy the building, which will feature on- site child care facilities.
