DEPARTMENT OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF
REGULATORY/LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL TO STATE COURT COMMISSION
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Director Jim Conran has announced that Mary-Alice Coleman, regulatory and legislative counsel for the Department of Consumer Affairs, has been appointed by California Supreme Court Justice Malcolm M. Lucas to the Commission on the Future of the Courts.
Conran said, "We are proud to have a member of our staff appointed to this commission, which includes judges, legislators, the California Attorney General and community and consumer representatives. The commission will plan and prepare for the needs of the legal consumer in the next century. I believe that Mary-Alice's experience in the legislative and regulatory arenas will be extremely helpful to the work of the commission."
The 41-member commission is charged with four tasks: 1) to identify the trends that will have an impact on the courts in the year 2020; 2) to envision the alternative futures and preferred choices for the courts; 3) to report on the probable future structure of the courts; and 4) to devise a plan which will lead California's courts toward the desired choices. The State Justice Institute has granted funds to the Judicial Council to carry out this project, known as "2020 Vision: A Plan for the Future of California's Courts."
Coleman, 39 and a resident of Davis, is the attorney who oversees the adoption of regulations by the department's professional boards and bureaus in conjunction with the Office of Administrative Law and assists in drafting the department's legislative program. She is a graduate of the University of California (Boalt Hall) School of Law and received her M.P.A. and B.A. from California State University, Chico.
