DEPARTMENT OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS ADVISES CAUTION
BY THOSE DAMAGED BY THE OAKLAND HILLS FIRE
SACRAMENTO, Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Jim Conran, director of the California Department of Consumer Affairs, advises people who are rebuilding homes destroyed by the Oakland Hills fire to contact licensed geologists and engineering geologists, when necessary, before reconstructing.
Conran stated, "People required by state, Alameda County, or City of Oakland regulations to hire a geologist or engineering geologist for rebuilding or regrading should hire one who is reputable and licensed. Many areas of the impacted zone are near the Hayward Fault and are in an Alquist-Priolo Special Studies Zone. These areas may require the expertise of a licensed geologist."
Alameda County Ordinance Code, Title 7, Building Regulations: Section 7-22.15, and Article 8 Chapter 2, Oakland Municipal Code, Amended as Ordinance 11291 C.M.S., require specific geological studies in Alquist-Priolo Special Studies Zones and/or areas of exceptionally steep slope where construction or reconstruction are necessary. Consult the County of Alameda, Architectural Services Department at 510-670-5450 or the City of Oakland, Development Services, at 510-273-3443 for specific requirements in your area.
The Department of Consumer Affairs' Board of Registration for Geologists and Geophysicists can provide licensing information for reputable geologists and engineering geologists. The board's phone number is 916-445-1920.
Consumer Affairs advises homeowners to consult the board before signing any geological contract, and to beware of individuals who say they can handle your geological investigations very rapidly. Please deal directly with licensed professional geologists or the staff of the state, county, city or insurance companies. Do not assume that a business is reputable because it has an 800 number.
