DENMARK'S NATIONAL SUPERCOMPUTER CENTER TO GET MOST POWERFUL SYSTEM IN COUNTRY; NEW SUPERCOMPUTER WILL STRENGTHEN POSITION OF DANISH RESEARCH

AARHUS, Denmark, July 12 /PRNewswire/ -- It has now been decided that Denmark's next large supercomputer will be delivered by the American company, Cray Research, Inc. (NYSE: CYR), and will be up and running by the end of the year. The acquisition is intended to strengthen Danish frontline research and is the second phase in the expansion of new advanced computer facilities that are being placed at the disposal of Danish researchers. The system, a CRAY C92A supercomputer, will be installed in fourth quarter of this year and replaces an Amdahl VP12200 system.
"With the new supercomputer facility, Danish research will truly move into the driver's seat, even by international standards. Over the last two years, UNI-C has acquired the country's first massively parallel supercomputer, along with a mid-size vector processor system in Aarhus. This has provided researchers with new possibilities, and it has created new breakthroughs. I am convinced that the new very large vector processor system will strengthen Danish research further in the international competition," said UNI-C's director of administration, Dorte Olesen.
The supercomputer will be used mostly for research in technical and natural science areas. Before the acquisition, all present and all likely users were asked about their needs and desires in an opinion survey. The Ministry of Education also had three foreign experts review UNI-C's supercomputer service and the need for new acquisitions.
The decision to buy the new supercomputer was made in cooperation with the Ministry of Education's Computer Capacity Commission and Strategy and Coordination Commission, where the research councils are represented. As mentioned earlier, this is the second phase in the expansion of the national supercomputer facilities. The last phase will concern the expansion of the so-called parallel supercomputer facilities and will take place in 1994 after a new round of proposals.
The supercomputer, located at UNI-C, Denmark's computer center for research and education, is the country's most powerful to date, five times more powerful than its predecessor. The computer is a vector processor type system, which means that it computes so-called vectors (i.e., whole sets of numbers, rather than individual numbers). By using this method, it is able to do almost two billion calculations per second.
The company, Cray Research, has been and still is at the cutting edge in the development of supercomputers. It was the CRAY-1 system that in 1976 began the whole era of vector processor systems. The CRAY C92A supercomputer has two central processors. The peak performance is 1.98 gigaflops. Memory consists of 1 gigabyte central memory and 52 gigabytes of attached disk memory. The CRAY C92A is a future- oriented system. It can be expanded with massively parallel capabilities, which would be integrated with the vector processor system.
