DENIS Thatcher, 87, has undergone a six-hour coronary by-pass operation, described by his doctors as 'a complete success'.

Sir Denis, husband of former Tory Prime Minister Lady Thatcher was expected to make a full recovery.

The operation took place at the Harley Street Clinic in central London where Sir Denis has been a patient for several days.

He is now expected to remain in hospital for one or two weeks before returning home to recuperate.

Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith said: 'I send my personal very best wishes to Sir Denis and Lady Thatcher at this difficult time.

'We will all keep our fingers crossed and hope that he makes a full and speedy recovery.'
