DELTA TO TAKE $50 MILLION WRITE-OFF FOR PAN AM-RELATED EXPENSES

DELTA TO TAKE $50 MILLION WRITE-OFF FOR PAN AM-RELATED EXPENSES
ATLANTA, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- In a discussion with Wall Street analysts today, Thomas J. Roeck, Delta Air Lines' (NYSE: DAL) senior vice president and chief financial officer, stated the company would write off approximately $50 million in the December 1991 quarter for expenses relating to Delta's participation in Pan American Airways' reorganization efforts.
Roeck also indicated that, while passenger revenue in October was reasonably close to forecast, passenger revenue in November was lower than forecast. "Poor economic conditions weakened domestic traffic and passenger mile yield growth in November," Roeck said.
He noted, however, that a month-to-date traffic for December and bookings for the remainder of the month indicate that traffic growth is back on target with projections. In addition, the passenger mile yield in December is expected to return to modest year-over-year growth trends.
Commenting on the Pan Am creditors committee lawsuit relating to a reorganized Pan Am, Roeck said that Delta met or exceeded all of its obligations and the lawsuit is without merit. Delta intends to defend the matter vigorously in the courts, he noted, adding that the suit will not impact Delta's recently completed purchase of Pan Am assets.
