DELTA DENTAL OFFERS AIDS PREVENTION PROGRAM TO PARTICIPATING DENTISTS
HARRISBURG, Pa., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Most Pennsylvania dentists will know more about protecting their patients and themselves from AIDS, thanks to a Pennsylvania dental insurance company.
Delta Dental of Pennsylvania is providing a new infection control education program to more than 5,000 participating dentists, announced Gary D. Radine, president of the Harrisburg area-based, not-for-profit dental insurance company.
"Delta Dental of Pennsylvania wanted to take direct action to address public concerns about health care providers and AIDS. By distributing the education program through Delta Dental of Pennsylvania, we are able to reach the majority of Pennsylvania dentists," said Radine.
According to Radine, the program will cost Delta Dental of Pennsylvania almost $200,000 to distribute. "We believe the investment is more than worth it because this new education program will help dentists protect the public and their offices.
"Insulating their practices from AIDS and other viruses is important to dentists. The program addresses an immediate need to disseminate the latest information on the control of AIDS, hepatitis and other infectious diseases," Radine added.
The program trains dentists and dental office staff on current Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and was produced with the help of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Titled "Universal Precautions -- AIDS and Hepatitis B for the Dental Health Team," the program consists of a workbook and videotape, and is designed for self-study or classroom instruction.
"This education program explains clearly and concisely the danger posed by blood-borne viruses such as HIV and Hepatitis B, how they are spread and safety guidelines in preventing their transmission during dental procedures," Radine explained.
The Delta Dental Plan system is a nationwide organization of health care plans that underwrite and administer employee dental benefit programs. Delta Dental is the nation's largest dental benefits carrier, providing coverage for more than 20 million people in the United States and Puerto Rico through a network of more than two-thirds of all dentists nationwide. In Pennsylvania, more than 400,000 people are covered by Delta Dental and more than 5,000 dentists participate in the Delta Dental network.
