DELTA AIR LINES TO WRITE OFF $82.5 MILLION IN RESTRUCTURING CHARGES IN MARCH 1993 QUARTER

ATLANTA, April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) announced today it will write off, in the March 1993 quarter, $82.5 million in nonrecurring fleet restructuring expenses.
This pretax charge is related to the retirement of all 21 Airbus A310 aircraft acquired from Pan American in connection with the acquisition of its European routes.
The $82.5 million write-off includes maintenance required prior to returning 18 leased A310 aircraft to lessors, leasehold improvements on nine of the aircraft, a write-down of three owned A310-200 aircraft and certain A310 spare parts to reflect current market value, and pilot furlough payments and retraining costs.
Thomas J. Roeck Jr., senior vice president - finance and chief financial officer, noted that, excluding the onetime charge, Delta's unit cost performance (as measured by operating costs per available seat mile) in the March 1993 quarter will improve vs. the March 1992 quarter. Roeck said: "The steps we have taken to reduce expenses throughout the Company, including staffing reductions, a 5 percent wage cut for domestic noncontract personnel, and the implementation of a Profit Improvement Program, are contributing to better unit cost performance. We are on target with our Profit Improvement Program goal for fiscal 1993."
Delta will report financial results for the March 1993 quarter on April 22, 1993.
