DELTA AIR LINES RECEIVES 100TH McDONNELL DOUGLAS TWIN JET
 DURING SPECIAL DELIVERY CEREMONY
LONG BEACH, Calif., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Delta Air Lines today received its 100th McDonnell Douglas MD-88 twin jet during a special delivery ceremony at Douglas Aircraft Co. in Long Beach.
Company employees and representatives from Delta, Douglas and Pratt & Whitney gathered on the flight ramp in front of the new airplane to celebrate the milestone.
Alec Pyron, Delta's director of engineering who accepted delivery of the MD-88, said, "Delta's goal throughout our history has been to serve the traveling public with the latest and finest aircraft available. The MD-88 exemplifies the up-to-the-minute technology for Delta's continued growth and route expansion.
"Our first MD-80 series aircraft was introduced on March 9, 1987, and today we proudly take delivery of our 100th MD-88."
Delta has an additional 25 MD-88 aircraft on order and 25 on option.
Pyron joined Charles Ahern, regional vice president, commercial marketing at Douglas, for the special event. Also present were Buzz Lowry, MD-80 vice president and general manager, Dave McGonigle, vice president of Pratt & Whitney, and Bill Watts, Delta captain.
In his remarks, Ahern noted that McDonnell Douglas has a long and successful relationship with Delta, spanning more than 51 years. The airline has operated every commercial aircraft that Douglas has built, with the exception of the DC-1 and DC-5, and it was the first carrier to order the DC-9 which led to the MD-80 series.
"As a pre-eminent airline operator," Ahern said, "Delta has used only products from proven winners. They select only the best when it comes to product reliability and passenger comfort.
"With the purchase of over 500 Douglas airplanes, they continue to be one of our best and most loyal friends," he said.
Development of the MD-88, one of five twin jet models produced by Douglas, began in 1986 after orders for the aircraft were received from Delta. Featuring advanced interior design and cockpit systems, Delta's MD-88 accommodates 142 passengers and has a nonstop range of more than 1,850 statute miles.
Advanced Pratt & Whitney engines and use of sound-suppressing materials allow the airplane to meet the most stringent noise regulations. The MD-80 consistently maintains the highest dispatch reliability in its class.
McDonnell Douglas has delivered more than 950 MD-80s. The quiet, fuel-efficient and pro-environment airplanes are in service with more than 50 operators around the the world, flying in nearly 70 countries. Douglas twin jets have received the Air Transport World Technology Achievement Award, honoring 25 years of successful DC-9, MD-80 and MD-90 design, production and in-service performance accomplishments.
