DELTA AIR LINES EXPANDS AIRFONE SERVICE FROM GTE WITH
INSTALLATION OF SEATFONE SYSTEM ON MORE THAN 400 AIRCRAFT
OAK BROOK, Ill., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- GTE Airfone today announced that Delta Air Lines is greatly expanding the availability of the Airfone passenger-telephone service throughout its fleet with the installation of the Seatfone system on selected aircraft. The Seatfone system allows passengers to place telephone calls without leaving their seats.
Under terms of the agreement, GTE Airfone will install the system on more than 400 of Delta's 757, 737-200/300, A310, MD-80/90 and Delta Shuttle aircraft. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Delta has provided passenger-telephone services since 1984 with GTE Airfone's bulkhead-mounted, cordless system.
"Delta was one of the first airlines to offer the Airfone service, and we're pleased they are expanding service with the Seatfone system," said Robert C. Calafell, GTE Airfone president. "Customers appreciate the convenience and ease of placing calls right at their seats."
"Today's traveler needs the ability to communicate instantly, wherever he or she may be -- even at 40,000 feet," said Whit Hawkins, Delta president and chief operating officer. "The Seatfone system will bring new convenience and capabilities to make our passengers' Delta flights more enjoyable and productive."
 Telephones At Your Fingertips
Installation will begin this fall with Delta's Boeing 757, Boeing 737 and MD-88 fleets. First-class seats will feature the Seatfone system in the armrest, while coach seats will have one phone in a seatback per each seat group. Seat groups of four or five seats will have two phones per group.
Air travelers operate the Seatfone system by inserting a billing card into a slot in the seatback to release the telephone handset. They then slide the same card through the handset's built-in card reader, which verifies the card and records billing information. After that, a passenger simply dials the area code and telephone number. The system accepts major credit cards, the AT&T Calling Card, MCI Card and most local telephone-company calling cards.
The Airfone service is available on 1,784 aircraft operated by 12 airline companies. Customers have placed approximately 19 million calls on the system since its inception in 1984.
GTE Airfone, based here, is a wholly owned subsidiary of GTE Corp. (NYSE: GTE), which is the fourth-largest publicly owned telecommunications company in the world.
